Dreams Wander On: Contemporary Poems of Death Awareness, edited by Robert Epstein, Published by Modern English Tanka Press, Baltimore, Maryland 2011, 134 p.
Robert Epstein, an American therapist, being also a haiku poet, editor of the above anthology has created a collection of poems in which the leitmotiv is death or death awareness. This excellent book contained 328 haiku (6 haiku in haiga), 47 tanka as well as 5 "larger" poems (1 in haiga) from 185 authors. Among those included were Eric Amann, an'ya, David Cobb, L. A. Davidson, Patricia Donegan, Denis M. Garrison, Allen Ginsberg, Lee Gurga, Penny Harter, William J. Higginson, Gary Hotham, Jim Kacian, Elizabeth Searle Lamb, David G. Lanoue, Peggy Willis Lyles, Marlene Mountain, Francine Porad, John Stevenson, George Swede, Charles Trumbull, Cor van den Heuvel, Max Verhart, and many others. The complete list of the authors is at the end of this post.
I'm especially glad to see my haiku on one of the pages of this splendid anthology and more so that haiku was presented in haiga form, of which the author was Dorota Pyra. Without her image that accompanies my poem, haiku would lose its power of influance, its double meaning (but only in English version--not in Polish one).

The title used by Robert Epstein for his anthology comes from the last poem of Basho:
旅に病で
夢は枯野を
かけ廻る
夢は枯野を
かけ廻る
tabi ni yan
yume wa kareno wo
kake-meguru
Sick on a journey,
my dreams wander
the withered fields.
Bashō's last poem, written while he was dying of a stomach illness. (Translation: Robert Hass)
Sick on a journey –
over parched fields
dreams wander on.
Basho, On Love and Barley: Haiku of Basho, London, 1985, p. 81 (Translation: Lucien Stryk)
Travelling, sick
My dreams roam
On a withered moor.
(Unknown translator)
Fallen sick on a journey
In dreams I run wildly
Over a withered moor
(Unknown translator)

It is the last poem he wrote, the kind of death poem (辞世の句 jisei no ku).
I'll write a few words on "DREAMS WANDER ON" tomorrow (The Fifth Season of Life - Dreams Wander On, edited by Robert Epstein (2)).
