Czesław Miłosz - haikuish or quasi-haiku / haikuish quotes | Haikowe lub prawie haikowe Cytaty (10)

What was Czesław Miłosz looking for in poetry?

Description demands intense observation, so intense that the veil of everyday habit falls away and what we paid no attention to, because it struck us as so ordinary, is revealed as miraculous. (1)

I do not disguise the fact that I seek in poems a revelation of reality, of what is so-called epiphaneia in Greek. (2)

[...]Epiphany thus interrupts the everyday flow of time and enters as one
privileged moment when we intuitively grasp a deeper, more essential reality
hidden in things or persons. A poem-epiphany tells about one moment-event
and this imposes a certain form.(3)

Thereby the question rises how it is possible that Milosz did not write haiku and why?

Haiku powstało podczas Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Haiku w Gandawie (wrzesień 2010), a dokładniej: w czasie przejażdżki łodzią po rzece Leie.

Haiku composed during the International Haiku Festival in Ghent (September 2010), and more precisely on the boat ride-ginko.

Haiku wszystkich uczestników festiwalu zostały opublikowane w po-festiwalowej antologii Zilvervisje glimt | Silver fry flicker (Srebrna rybka lśni).

All festival participants' haiku were published  in a post-festival anthology Zilvervisje glimt | Silver fry flicker (Uitgave Viadagio, 2010).

Tytuł antologii został zaczerpnięty z pierwszego wersu haiku belgijskiego pisarza i krytyka Augusta Vermeylena.

The title of the anthology was taken from the first line of haiku  by the Belgian writer and literary critic August Vermeylen.

The sword of Damocles | Miecz Damoklesa

"Miecz Damoklesa" Richard Westall (1812 r.).
In Richard Westall's Sword of Damocles, 1812, the boys of Cicero's anecdote have been changed to maidens for a neoclassical patron, Thomas Hope.

A child is a real cosmos | Dziecko to prawdziwy kosmos

In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few.

Dorota Pyra's blog: rozsypany-czas

A child is indeed a real cosmos (vide: Dorota Pyra's astonishing haiga).
And its imaginationa planet not discovered to the end, which attracts ideas straight from its childish knowledge.

patyk i kamień
dzisiaj znów moje dziecko
stwarza świat

stick and stone
today my child again
creates a world

The hero of Dorota's lovely haikuTHE CHILDplaying with things already well known in prehistory (a stick and pebble) is able to create on the sand or on a small piece of ground ITS OWN WORLD.
It is the world perhaps even without adjectives; it is still the world of chaotic lines and geometric shapes, but also it is the world in which a stick changes into a magic wand, and the child becomes a magician of possibilities.

From the point of view of child (as well as of an adult) the world seems to be an eternity, which he/she experiences every moment, and which the child sees during encounter with the rule of chaos constantly modified by childish possibilities in the course of its daily play.

It is just in it that the seed of the art lies.

Dorota Pyra's blog: rozsypany-czas

Dziecko to rzeczywiście prawdziwy kosmos (vide: niesamowita haiga Doroty).
A jego wyobraźnia - nieodkrytą do końca planetą przyciągająca pomysły prosto z dziecięcej wiedzy.

patyk i kamień
dzisiaj znów moje dziecko
stwarza świat

stick and stone
today my child again
creates a world

To właśnie w niej tkwi zalążek sztuki.
